Improper Bostonian's Best of 2007! "The Milky Way is evidence that Jamaica Plain might be in a galaxy of its own (and perhaps a cooler one). The funky bar, lounge, and bowling alley all rolled into one is an institution and a welcome change for anyone seeking and alternative to the same old, same old. Almost every day of the week, they offer something unique: free bowling Mondays after 9, live-band karaoke every other Tuesday...its simply impossible to have a dull night here. The eclectic entertainment reflects the clientele - from hip-hop dance parties to indie-rock shows to fund raisers for local gay rights groups, you never know who you’ll be rubbing elbows (or other body parts) with. After working up an appetite on the lanes, patrons can nosh on delicacies like the Coca-Cola-braised pork tacos from the tapas-style bar menu. Drinks range from the standard to the exotic; JP iced tea offers a refreshing take on the traditional summer cocktail. The Milky Way is one reason we are glad we live on planet Earth." |

Improper Bostonian's 13th Best of Guide: "Quirky and unconventional are two adjectives that come to mind when we think of this funky outpost in JP. Long before bowling's current renassaince, this subterranean hideout was offering terrific tenpin, and it continues to lead the way in offbeat entertainment by hosting karaoke, Latin dancing, underground DJs, comedians and spoken-word happenings. (Tuesday night Karoake is so cool that actual rockstars, like the Breeders, have been known to stop by.) In the past year, the bar acquired a full liquor license and began renting out its kooky space for weddings, rehearsal dinners, and private functions. The brainchild of Carol Downs and Katherine Mainzer, it's the hip little nightlife venue that could, and does. And it continues to defy our expectations." |

Secret Boston Secret Boston, The Unique Guidebook to Boston's Hidden Sites, Sounds, & Tastes By Laura Purdom "Part lounge, part lanes, The Milky Way Lounge & Lanes is a quaint seven-lane candlepin alley that attracts trendy-somethings and young families. The Milky Way is festooned with homegrown decor, with 1950s lampshades (faux leopard skin, contiki prints) and Christmas lights glittering in the lanes' polished surfaces. The bowling alley is of the same vintage as SaccoÍs, but these are not the sweetest conditions. Diehard candlepin bowlers go elsewhere. In a stroke of genius, when half of the alleys were closed down to make room for the lounge, builders put up picture windows. If you walk down past the bar toward the waitress stand, you can look in on the 70-year-old machinery that runs the remaining seven lanes, with candlepins nesting and ready for the next round. The Milky Way is also a cool nightclub with live local bands and dancing. A couple of pool tables an da new table hockey game round out the social pleasures of this JP classic. You can order food from the upstairs cafe, Bella Luna. In short, the Milky Way is a great combination of all you need in life-food, beer, entertainment, friends and candlepins." |
